Match Report: Estonian 1st XI Vs Carmel CC XI
Carmel 8/148, Estonian 1st XI 6/151. Estonian 1st XI Win by 4 wkts

Sunday....... the Land of the Walking Dead.

Firstly may I say how impressed I was that everyone turned up, despite leaving various bits of their bodies behind on their bathroom floors. Tim was still struggling with his hammy, and James had torn a groin muscle in suspicious circumstances (apparently a rubber ball, a Spiderman costume, and the DVD of Dirty dancing was involved).

Bolts turned up looking like he was going to kill someone, the skip was in a foul mood (worse than usual), and Anil at last arrived at Terminal A for the Superseacat.

It was obviously going to be a difficult day to motivate, and to encourage as everyone who had been to Helsinki the previous day was one sarcastic comment away from 10 years for manslaughter.

Fortunately the opposition had been out all night and even more fortunately, their Aussie batsman who had devastated us for the last two days, was fast asleep on one of the Arena Puubi terrace tables.

'You can bat!' the Estonian Skip proclaimed.

From memory, a mediocre bowling performance from the skipper saw Estonia get the breakthrough with the only straightball that the skip bowled in his spell.

Murali, Estonia's Secret Sunday Weapon, is the only bowler in Estonian history to warrant 4 slips a gully and a point for a whole over, and then two more after that; a fantastic dispaly by one of our newest and hopefully regular bowlers.

Venkat and Sanjiv also joined the team, and Sanjiv too got into the action when bowling, making another crucial breakthrough at the right time.

However tiredness was apparent, with several catches going down, the easiest one of which feel to the skipper, despite him running the furthest he has done all season to get to it. Great bowling again from Rob Brookes and from Andrus, the latter of which saw him bowling at the Dangerous Aussie batsman for one over for which he only went for 5 runs...fantastic stuff to see.

A target of 148 was set and the opening batsman of Anil (*another hamstring torn), Venkat, Martin, Phil, and Sanjiv set about this total in steady methodical fashion.

With the grey skies gathering and flashes of lightening in the air (hopefully nowhere near Superseacat), it was left to Siva Bangralina and Jason Barry to set about the bowlers and bring the match to a final and satisfactory conclusion with 2 overs to spare.

Man of Match: Rob Brookes, for execllent performance with the ball and also as his last game before returning to Oz.

And finally

Thanks to everyone who travelled and/or played this weekend.

Thanks also to Tim for his support as Vice Captain, and for the team for responding so well even when they were so tired, and carrying various aches and pains and for sticking to their jobs.

Thanks to Carmel for being a great bunch of lads..... despite beating us in the 6's....

My thanks to Martin Dungay for skippering the B team and congratulations on their amazing success. The improvemnt in everyone is tangible and it is to the credit of those 'development players' that I now view them as everyone else, 1st team squad members, fully deserving of their place in the team.

Its a pleasure to captain the Estonian team, and although sometimes tough decisions need to be made in terms of players excluded from matches, as well batting and bowling and fileding changes, all the team have been incredibly helpful to me by doing what has been asked without question. I know I can be sometimes a little pedantic, tough in terms of on field discipline and yes, an arse, but its all for a reason to help us become a better team, better quality, and thereby happier with our performances. This weekend has shown how good we have become. Thanks again.

But we arent there yet. See you at training Wednesday!
